Heritage rail travel has a unique ability to transport passengers back in time.

The Ceres Rail Company’s initial mission was to shift rail-friendly freight from road to rail.
In the process the company found that people seeking immersive travel, were equally at home aboard its heritage trains.
According to Rick Botha, General Manager at the Ceres Rail Company, heritage rail tourism is a sector of ‘slow’ travel.
“Our offering invites guests to fully immerse themselves in South Africa, engaging with local communities and taking time away from the distractions of a fast-moving world,” says Botha.
A slow journey through history
The company’s Mossel Bay Explorer takes passengers through the diverse landscapes of the Western Cape offering guests time to take in the scenery, relax in a lounge chair, or find a quiet corner to read.
“You are on a slow journey through history,” says Botha.
This train experience is steeped in South Africa’s railway heritage. Coaches originally used by the South African Railways form the backbone of the train.
Most of the staff members worked on the railways in the past and share their stories and memories of an era of rail travel. “Passengers encounter interesting pieces of history along the way, making the journey as much about heritage as it is about relaxation,” says Botha.
Experience your own country from a new perspective
The Mossel Bay Explorer is designed with local and international passengers in mind, but there is a particular focus on South Africans experiencing their own country from a new perspective.
The service also contributes to local communities along its route, partnering with towns for accommodation, meals, and transfers.
This collaboration not only supports local economies but strengthens cultural connections, giving passengers a deeper understanding of the regions they pass through.
Sustainability a cornerstone
Sustainability is another cornerstone of the company’s approach. Efforts to minimize environmental impact include onboard waste sorting and recycling and educating guests about their footprint as they travel through South Africa’s natural landscapes.
The company aims to strike a balance between immersive tourism and responsible stewardship of the environment.
Botha says that operating heritage rail tours comes with its challenges.
“Historically, reliability and adherence to schedules have been difficult, but partnerships with Transnet help mitigate these issues.”
Looking ahead, the company sees numerous opportunities for growth, including expanding routes, introducing new experiences, and incorporating more interactive historical content for passengers.
“Having guests engage with our collective history is crucial. It gives them perspective on South Africa’s growth and potential,” says Botha.
